UN Warns Israeli Gaza Expansion Plan Will Deepen Child Suffering

(MENAFN) According to reports, the United Nations has warned that an Israeli plan to extend control over up to 70% of Gaza would significantly worsen conditions for children already facing severe humanitarian hardship.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reportedly instructed the military to expand territorial control inside the Gaza Strip, in what the UN described as a move that goes beyond the terms of a fragile ceasefire established in October.

Netanyahu said the military had already been operating in about 50% of the territory under ceasefire arrangements, later expanding to around 60%, and added: “My directive is to move to... 70 per cent,” according to reports.

UNICEF has warned that further territorial expansion would intensify an already critical health and humanitarian crisis affecting children, particularly due to shortages of food, clean water, and sanitation services.

According to reports, Israel controls the entry points and aid flow into Gaza, which has been under blockade since 2007, adding further strain to humanitarian access.

UNICEF spokesperson Salim Oweis, speaking from Gaza, said people are now concentrated in roughly 40% of the territory, describing conditions where civilians are “sheltering among broken buildings, rubble and mounting solid waste.”

He added: “there is no accessible space left to clear” the waste, highlighting worsening environmental and public health conditions.

According to reports, health impacts are increasingly visible, with rising cases of respiratory infections, acute watery diarrhoea, and widespread skin diseases affecting children and households across the enclave.
