Israel Condemns Spain Over Netanyahu Effigy Explosion at Easter Festival

(MENAFN) Israel has strongly criticized Spain following an incident in which a large effigy of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu filled with fireworks was destroyed during an Easter celebration in the southern Spanish town of El Burgo, according to reports.

The event, which took place during local festivities, involved a seven-meter figure representing Netanyahu that was packed with roughly 14 kilograms of fireworks. The effigy was set ablaze and detonated amid cheering crowds, with footage showing explosions erupting during the celebration.

According to reports, Israeli officials condemned the display, describing it as offensive and politically provocative. The Israeli Foreign Ministry labeled the act as “appalling anti-Semitic hatred” and accused Spain of encouraging hostility through what it called “systemic incitement.”

Following the incident, Israel also summoned Spain’s chargé d’affaires to address the matter.

The controversy comes amid already strained diplomatic relations between Spain and Israel.

According to reports, tensions have intensified following recent geopolitical developments, including Spain’s decision to withdraw its ambassador from Israel and downgrade diplomatic engagement.

Additional reporting indicates that Israel recently excluded Spanish representatives from a US-supported coordination center in Kiryat Gat that monitors ceasefire arrangements in Gaza, framing the move as a response to Spain’s criticism of Israeli military actions.

According to reports, the incident in El Burgo has further deepened diplomatic friction between the two countries, adding to an already volatile political climate shaped by broader regional conflicts and international disagreements.
