UN Cautions Lack of Aid Worsens Conditions in Gaza

(MENAFN) The United Nations cautioned on Monday that the flow of humanitarian relief into the Gaza Strip has declined as a result of Israeli limitations, even as civilian requirements continue to exceed what relief organizations are able to provide.

Referring to information from the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), UN spokesperson Farhan Haq told reporters that "the UN and our partners continue to deliver assistance to the most vulnerable families," while stressing that "needs continue to outpace the ability of humanitarians to respond, given the ongoing impediments they face."

He further noted that harsh weather conditions are compounding the crisis, stating that "Rainstorms and colder temperatures are also exacerbating the situation across the Strip."

According to Haq, between Thursday and Saturday, UN-affiliated organizations involved in shelter assistance distributed "3,800 tents, nearly 4,600 tarpaulins, and thousands of bedding items to some 4,800 families."

He also drew attention to measures aimed at protecting newborns, explaining that partners are addressing "the growing risks of hypothermia in newborns, with tailored kits that are locally procured and prepared for distribution," and emphasized that "these kits will be provided to mothers and caregivers with newborn and very young children."

Despite these efforts, Haq underscored that overall aid supplies have diminished. He explained: "Since Friday, and due to ongoing restrictions affecting our ability to bring in sufficient volumes of aid, our partners have once again had to reduce the assistance being provided."

As a result, the scaled-back assistance package now consists of "one food parcel, one bag of flour, and 1.5 kilograms of high-energy biscuits," which, he said, "covers half of the minimum caloric needs per family for the remainder of the month."
